Challenge

Streaming is social in culture but isolated in product. People want to watch together and build a community, but the tools they use are fragmented and clunky. SharePlay needed co-streaming and community to feel native, not hacked together.

Approach

We mapped how people already co-watch: Twitch, Discord, group texts, second screens. Sync and presence mattered more than chat depth, so going live became three steps (go live, choose a camera, stream) and interaction became quick reactions and presence instead of heavy chat.

01 Discovery

Understanding shared behaviour.

Watching together already happens across chat apps and second screens. What people needed most was sync and presence, not deeper chat.

SharePlay yellow marks the active tab.

02 Experience design

Removing setup friction.

Going live became three steps: go live, choose a camera setup, stream. Onboarding shrank to near zero so people can broadcast in the moment.

03 Interaction model

Lightweight engagement.

Quick reactions and presence indicators instead of heavy chat, so the experience stays immersive rather than noisy.

Leaderboards, with every name replaced by a sample handle.

Outcome

Live in beta at shareplay.tv on desktop and mobile web, with creator tools in PlayStudio and a native app in testing. Reducing friction at entry was the single biggest driver of adoption.
